NLP: Unlock The Long Lost Language of Your Mind

NLP, or Neurolinguistic Programming, is the long-lost user manual of the mind.  It’s about changing limiting and disempowering beliefs into more empowering ones to help us get what we want in life and work. This article will discuss the philosophies behind neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and why it’s so interesting.

What is NLP?

Neurolinguistic programming (or NLP) is an expanding field characterized by an attitude of continual growth and experimentation and a methodology of modelling excellence.

It’s the study of excellence, how to find it in others and then how to find it within ourselves. That means that new techniques and ideas are always being added to the body of work of NLP. It’s one of the reasons why seeing leadership modelled or “being the example” is often said to be the most effective way to see the change in others we seek to see.

NLP is the study of subjective experience and how it affects our own experiences.

  • Neuro (N): Our nervous system or mind, which we use to experience the world.
  • Linguistic (L): The language or other communication we use to experience and give it meaning, like pictures, sounds, feelings, smells, tastes and our internal dialogue.
  • Program (P): Discovering the programs, patterns and strategies of our mind and using them to achieve our goals.

What would life look like when you can release limiting beliefs or without the shadow of past emotions and really come into alignment without internal conflict?

The words we choose to use and what meaning we give those words determines our reality.

NLP is based on this belief:

Our physiology (our internal representation based on our experiences, beliefs, etc) impacts our state, which impacts our behaviours which then impacts our results.

And so at the core of NLP is being able to change our internal representation into something that’s more empowering which will then allow us “get out of our own way” and really go after that the things we want in life and work.

  • to build your dream business or career
  • to have meaningful connections in your life and less drama
  • to live your life in an aligned way

Through NLP, we’re basically just changing the way a thought is encoded. Think of your mind as a computer and the programming is being updated.

And all of this is done with ecology and integrity, which means that it’s safe for you, safe for the practitioner, safe for others around you and safe for the World. We’re always looking for a win-win-win-win.

The Formula for Success is Empowerment

One of the first things we learn in NLP is the formula for success which equals empowerment.

You either live at effect or at cause.

Living at Effect (E)

Life is the thing that happens to you. They did that to you. It’s not your fault. When you live at effect to things outside of you, you’re giving away your power to make changes for different outcomes in the future.

Listing all the reasons why you can’t have something.

Living at Cause (C)

When you live at cause, you are aware of both the things going well and not so well. You’re saying yes, everything you experience in life is the sum total of your conscious and subsconsious beliefs and decisions. You create who you are, what you do and what you have. You have the ability to create your life.

The focus is on the results you want to achieve.

Note: Living and being at cause isn’t the same as being to blame. It is however about taking radical responsibility in how you show up and how you will move forward. You cannot control what happens but you can control how you respond to it.

If there’s an area in your life that’s not working for you, it’s likely you’re being at effect of something or someone.

NLP Communication Model

The NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) Communication Model

The neurolinguistic programming communication model blew my mind when I first learned it. It basically tells us that we have 2.3M bits of information and inputs coming through our senses at any time, subconsiously. That is WAY too much information for us to handle.

This information is then processed by deleting it (don’t notice at all), distorting it (minimize or blow out of proportion) or generalizing it using filters (time, location, mood, language, beliefs, identify, values, etc) into 126 bits of information that we consciously take in.

Since that is still too much information, we chunk that down into 7±2 chunks of information. Think of these chunks like file folders in a file cabinet.

That mean that 99.994% of the data is filtered and only 0.006% of any given data is processes as our reality at any given moment.

Everything that you want in your life that you don’t have is outside of your comfort zone.

Here’s a fun little exercise that helps us understand the power of focus.

10 white things: the power of focus

By changing the processes at the subconscious level, how we process this information, meaning by changing how we filter (time, location, mood, language, beliefs, identify, values, etc), we can completely change our reality and choose what we focus on.

Your values create your thoughts and beliefs, your thoughts and beliefs create your actions and your actions create your results. Your nervous system is programmed to produce behaviours based on the internal representations you make and in NLP (neurolinguistic programming) the focus is on changing those internal representations for long-term results and to get you closer to you desired outcome and life!

Let’s shift away from limiting and disempowering beliefs to more empowering beliefs so we can change the world.  Basically, NLP is a way to update the programming of your mind by working with your subconscious for more empowering thoughts and beliefs. What do you think about NLP?
