Everyday Items as Yoga props

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get all the benefits of yoga props. There are so many household yoga props that you can use instead that will help you find more space in your body and allow you to access more yoga poses too.

Let’s go through some of my favourite household props that you can use instead of the actual yoga prop itself:

Yoga blocks

  • Kitchen pan
  • Bread pan
  • Shoe boxes
  • Books
  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Lasso rope

For yoga block alternatives you’re looking for something somewhat sturdy, that can hold some weight but also that can give you a bit of length to get an extension from your arms. Yoga blocks are used in all styles of yoga. Check out this video to the yoga block alternatives in action.

Yoga Strap

  • Belt
  • Scarf
  • Dog leash
  • Rolled up towel
  • Leggings

For yoga strap alternatives you’re looking for anything long that has a bit of give to it so you can use it to create some resistance. Yoga straps are used in all styles of yoga. Check out this video to see these yoga strap alternatives in action.

Yoga bolster

  • Pillows
  • Stacked blankets

A yoga bolster is a bit tougher to mimic with home replacements, mainly because a yoga bolster is very dense. It’s also made a certain size to get into all the crevice’s in your body. I would recommend trying a pillow to start with to see how much you’re actually using this prop before investing in one because a good bolster is not cheap. Bolsters are mainly used in yin or restorative styles of yoga.

Yoga blanket

Any blanket you have at home

This is probably the most straight forward home replacement. You can use any blanket you have at home. I’d recommend using a lighter, couch style blanket that you can fold but honestly anything will do. The reason why people invest in a yoga blanket is because they are a bit stiffer and hold their shape, which again can be more comfortable when using it under your knees or to fill in those crevice’s. Blankets are used in all styles of yoga.

A wall, couch or chair

They make amazing yoga props that can be used to help you balance in a standing posture or for some extra support for poses like legs up the wall, figure 4 or shoulder stand.

The most important thing is to get creative with your props! Props are an amazing tool to help you feel the poses deeper and to find the ease within a posture that can be difficult. Don’t let your budget or space restraints prevent you from getting those benefits!
